Races praised as Foodshed Alliance heroes

AFP Correspondent

BLAIRSTOWN (April 1, 2017) — Doug and Jeanny Race were honored as farmers of the year by the Foodshed Alliance, a regional non-profit that supports local farming and farmers.
The award was presented by Eric Derby, president of the Foodshed Alliance board of trustees, honoring the Races for their donations of food, time and expertise to the group.
Race Farm is in its fourth generation of operation in Blairstown.
Doug’s parents, Carl and Joyce still work on the 100-acre spread as do their son Ryan and daughter Devin.
The farm was started in 1938 by Carl and Flora Race who passed it to Carl and Joyce in 1970.
They have a pick-your-own operation starting with blueberries in July and runs through October.
The Races offer hayrides and a picnic area. Their large farm store is on Route 94 near the center of Blairstown.
They also participate in several farmers’ markets, including the Morristown Winter Farmers Market.
The newest part of the business is Race’s Café and Creamery which serves soups, sandwiches and salads as well as homemade baked goods and ice cream.
They are long-time contributors of food and expertise to the Foodshed Alliance.
Jeanny Race is a culinary nutritionist.
She provided the desserts for the gala where the award was presented: sweet potato brown butter cupcakes with maple bacon streusel and apple cider donut sundaes with maple sweet potato ice cream.
The gala was held Saturday, March 25 at Blair Academy.
Other awards were presented.
Bob Canace, president of the Ridge and Valley Conservancy, was named Alliance Person of the Year. Executive Director Kendrya Close called Canace a mentor who helps the group seize new opportunities and think “outside the box.”
The two volunteer of the year awards were presented to Barbara Buda, a founder of the winter farmers’ market, and Michele Smith who works with LocalShare, a project that gleans from area farms for food pantries.
