Belvidere market tries to widen appeal
By JANE PRIMERANO
BELVIDERE, Warren County (July 15, 2015) — The Fourth of July weekend brought a different sort of energy to the Belvidere Farmers’ Market.
The market is held on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Second Street in front of the Warren County Courthouse.
Next to the courthouse is the county veterans’ memorial and once a year the Rolling Thunder veterans motorcycle club comes to town.
They line Second Street with antique military equipment and sell lunches and memorabilia.
The regular market vendors gather in a shady, grassy area between the courthouse and its parking lot.
On July 5, they were joined by the Warren hills FFA Alumni Affiliate. Joni Pollock, vice president of the group was selling raffle tickets for a 1955 Allis Chalmers Model CA tractor at $5 a ticket.
The group has 1,000 chances for sale and the drawing is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 25 at noon at the Belvidere market, Pollock said. She was hoping for a boom in business as the majority of the Rolling Thunder riders arrived with a police escort.
Pollock will attend the annual Alumni Development Conference in mid-July, held this year at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, but she’s planning her group’s fund raisers at the Warren County Farmers’ Fair.
The 10th annual Car Show will be held this year in memory of Mike Anema, an active member of the Warren Hills alumni who died unexpectedly on Dec. 17, 2014.
Anema and his wife, Linda, operated their dairy farm in Changewater until 2004 when they started Dutch Valley Florist.
He worked with the car show each year, so the group decided to honor him posthumously for his time and effort. Anema also participated in the tractor pulls with his John Deere 4020. His daughters will drive the tractor in the pull this year.
Pollock said the alumni are preparing for their waffle ice cream sandwich sale at the car show. The sandwiches are homemade waffles surrounding Hershey’s sliced ice cream in vanilla or vanilla/chocolate with chocolate syrup and powdered sugar available.
