The Mid Atlantic Poultry Farmer a supplement to the Delmarva Farmer

Chicken fittingly at top of Delmarva Chicken Festival menu

SALISBURY, Md. — Tons of chicken prepared in a variety of ways will be consumed when the 63rd Delmarva Chicken Festival takes place on June 15 and 16 at The Centre at Salisbury.
In addition to the ever-popular fried and barbecue chicken platters, there will be barbecued chicken sandwiches, chicken hot dogs, chicken pizza, chicken wraps, chicken gyros, chicken salads and chicken with a variety of ethnic flavors.
The event’s renowned giant fry pan is a not-to-miss attraction that will operate throughout the two-day celebration.
The giant frying pan, among the largest in the world, measures 10 feet in diameter with an 8-foot handle. The pan will be filled with nearly 180 gallons of soy cooking oil, provided by Perdue Agribusiness and Pioneer, a DuPont Business.
At one time, the pan can cook 800 chicken quarters, donated by Mountaire Farms, Inc.
When readied for operation, the pan is placed on a concrete block base over gas-fired burners. About 150 gallons of LP gas, donated by the Mid Atlantic Propane Gas Association, will be used during the two-day festival.
Platters at the price of $6 will include a chicken quarter, baked beans, applesauce and roll.
Tubs of four chicken quarters and four rolls will be available at $12 each and a “shortie” order of one quarter and a roll is $4.
Cooks from the Salisbury Jaycees will fire up charcoal pits to prepare $7 barbecue chicken platters that will include a half barbecue chicken, potato chips, pickle and roll.
To round out the festival menu, diners will find French fries, funnel cakes, fried Oreos and candy bars, Italian water ice, and more. There will be cold beverages including sodas, bottled water, hand-squeezed lemonade and sweet tea.
Proceeds from food and beverage sales are retained by the individual vendor and the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce.
The Delmarva Chicken Festival will open at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 15 and will conclude at 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 16. There is no charge for admission and parking.
