Easter causes scheduling changes for Va. Beef Expo

HARRISONBURG, Va. (March 28, 2017) — The 2017 Virginia Beef Expo and Junior Beef Roundup will be held on April 12–15, at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds in Harrisonburg, Va. Due to Easter weekend, there will be no events on Sunday, April 16.
“On years when the Expo falls on Easter weekend, it has been tradition to move the schedule forward one day so everyone can be home to celebrate Easter Sunday,” said Tom McCall, Virginia Beef Expo president. “We still anticipate a great event with full participation in the sales, trade show and youth events.”
The Beef Expo will begin Wednesday with the Trade Show opening at noon. There also will be a Kick-Off Social that evening, where buyers can preview sale cattle and visit with consignors.
The State Youth Cattle Working Contest is set for 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. Regional Youth Cattle Working Contest team winners will work to efficiently process three stocker calves, while utilizing Beef Quality Assurance guidelines. The State 4-H/FFA Tractor Driving Contest will be on Thursday, as well.
Beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, the Beef Expo will feature seedstock and commercial sales. This year’s Expo will feature Angus, Simmental, Hereford, Charolais and All Other Breeds sales. Commercial cattle will also be available for sale. Information regarding the sales will be featured on the Virginia Beef Expo’s new website and Facebook page.
The 2017 State 4-H/FFA Junior Stockmen’s Contest will be held Friday, April 14, at 10:00 a.m. This state-level event, open to members enrolled in a 4-H club or FFA chapter, tests a youth’s livestock industry knowledge. A Beef Food Challenge will follow the Stockmen’s contest.
The Jr. Beef Round-Up’s line up of events will conclude with the Youth Beef Shows. Showmanship competitions will take place Friday afternoon, and the shows for purebred cattle, commercial heifers, and prospect steers will be held Saturday, April 15.
