Md. Hereford breeders hold annual meeting

JARRETTSVILLE, Md. (Dec. 2, 2014) — Maryland Hereford breeders and friends met Nov. 22 at the Grimmel Farm in Jarrettsville in Harford County for their annual meeting and awards dinner.
The event was held in a restored barn the Grimmel family uses for events throughout the year.
During the business meeting, it was noted that Maryland had the second largest number of junior exhibiters of any state there, with 58 young people exhibiting 84 head of cattle, and that Maryland youth had two grand champions and 10 class winners in the show.
It was also announced that the 2015 National Junior Hereford Show will be held in June in Grand Island, Neb.
Newly elected officers and directors of the Maryland Hereford Association are president, Wes Schuman of Red Oak Point Farm in Oxford, Md.; vice-president, Rob Mehlman of Black River Farm in Joppa, Md.; secretary, Shelly Stull of Frederick, Md.; treasurer, Thelma Mills of R&T Acres of Frederick, Md.; and 2015 directors are Patrick Mullinix of in Woodbine, Md., Randy Bachtel of Fountain Valley Farm in Westminster, Md., and Peter Schaeffer of Spring Hill Farm in New Windsor, Md.
Schuman then reported that the 2014 Celebrate Maryland Hereford Sale held Oct. 11 at East Side Farm near Frederick, Md., had an excellent average of $3,985 on 70 plus lots, with the females averaging $3,932 and the bulls averaging $4,435 and Jay and Shelly Stull, owners of East Side Farm, were presented with a banner of appreciation for hosting past sales.
Also presented by newly elected president, Wes Schuman., was the Colonel E. Brooke Lee Award to Michelle Grimmel of Grimmel Farms, for her contributions as a junior advisor and her service to the Maryland Hereford Association.
