AFP awards $10,000 in scholarships split 10 ways
EASTON, Md. — The Delmarva Farmer scholarship committee awarded $10,000 in scholarships to 10 students.
Four recipients apiece were from Maryland and Virginia, one was from Delaware and one was from New Jersey.
The students were chosen from a large pool of applicants from across the Mid-Atlantic states.
Throughout March and April, members of a four-person scholarship committee read each application, and met on May 11 to debate the merits of all applicants.
“We had a variety of applicants this year and each student wrote an exceptional essay about his or her connection to agriculture or a significant ag issue,” said Michel Elben, American Farm Publications’ staff reporter and chairperson of the Scholarship Committee. “Thanks to the contributions and participation of people at our annual golf tournament, we were able to award 10 $1,000 scholarships to very deserving students this year.”
The 10 scholarship winners are:
• Allison Crittenden, Hardyville, Va., Virginia Tech;
• Morgan Harding, Jetersville, Va., Virginia Tech;
• Javan Harrell, Woodford, Va., Germanna Community College;
• Sarah Seggelink, Reedville, Va., Bridgewater College;
• Jenna Scott, Willards, Md., Salisbury University;
• Brent Ashley, Felton, Del. Virginia Tech;
• Matthew Bellistri, Salisbury, Md., Delaware Valley College;
• Katherine Stump, Havre de Grace, Md., Virginia Tech;
• Rachel Manning, Huntingtown, Md., West Virginia University; and
• Jennifer Wengryn, Ringoes, N.J., University of Delaware.
Members of the scholarship committee encourage students who were not awarded scholarships this year to apply again next year.
Applications will be made available in January for the 2013-14 school year.
Detailed profiles of each of the scholarship winners will appear in The Delmarva Farmer golf tournament supplement in August.
